Michael Crichton - October 23, 1942 – November 4, 2008

As some of you may know, my (John's) favorite contemporary author, Michael Crichton, died yesterday of cancer. He was 66 years old.

Michael Crichton was the first author that made me love to read. When I was in the 7th grade I saw the old movie "The Andromeda Strain" and was later told to read it by my brother, Ron (at least I think it was Ron). I read it, didn't understand most of the science, but I loved it. There was something amazingly attractive about the way he wrote. After "The Andromeda Strain" I read "Jurassic Park" at least 3 times before graduating high school and continued on with "The Lost World". Since that first book I've read only a few of his other books including "The Great Train Robbery", "Timeline", and "Congo" (6 total).

If not for Michael Crichton, I would probably not have read a single book until college. There will always be a special place on my book shelf and in my heart for his works. While I've read only a fraction of his books, I truly appreciate what he gave to readers in terms of compelling stories and entertainment.

As a tribute to him, I have made it my goal to read all of his published works that I have not yet read (that I can still find) during the year 2009 (approximately 16 works).

For you, Michael
